Semaglutide belongs to a class of medication called GLP1. This is a hormone that is naturally produced by the body is response to food in the stomach. From here the hormone is circulated in the pancreas, intestines, heart and brain. Once Semuglutide is injected it cirulcates through the blood and is used by multiple organs to produce weight loss. In 2021 the US Food and Drug administration approved Semaglutide injection for chronic weight management. It is indicated for use in adults with obesity (BMI of 30 or higher) or overweight (BMI 25 to greater than 30) who has a weight related condition such as HTN, type 2 DM or cholesterol. This medication is to be used in conjunction with reduced calorie diet and exercise.
How does Semaglutide work in the body?
Pancreas – When Semaglutide interacts with the pancreas and increases secretion of insulin, this helps to move sugar out of the body and into cells which reduces risk of developing diabetes.
GI tract – Semaglutide helps by slowing gastric motility which causes decreased appetite. This allows hunger to be curbed by making you fell full longer.
Brain – The hypothalamus is the past of the brain that controls hunger. Semaglutide works on this area of the brain to increase the feeling fullness. This allows people to control their food intake and promote weight loss.
Liver – The liver has the ability to generate new sugar. Semalutide discourages this ability by causing decreasing circulating blood sugar from moving into cells.
